If your plants are planted close to one another, as
mine are, the advantage is that it gives the
surrounding plants a little breathing room so they can
spread out a little bit.  Besides, the fading foliage
is ugly!.

Jeanne, what is the rationale for cutting back the basal growth?  (I take
it you mean the leaves)
