Re: Late summer/fall flowers

Hello Nan,
Never gardened in CA, so will have to stick with my some of my favorite
summer and fall blooming perennials here.
Number one on the list are the Asian Gentians with al the blue trumpets and
different foliages and sizes. There are other European species as well that
bloom in the summer and fall. For winter bloom try the NA natives G.
andressii and saponaria for blooms in October through December here.
You can have Monkshood in bloom from June through November simply by
picking the right cultivars/hybrids/ species.
Goldenrods are great. my favorites are the Stiff Goldenrod and the
selection called Fireworks.
Leadwort/Plumbago for peacock blue flowers as a ground cover. Red foliage
in fall and attracts the Hummingbird Moths. While on the subject of hummers
& moths, the Milkweed family are great summer bloomers. many species here
to choose from.
Asters are a must. The New England and its selections along with the new
Black Foliage Asters for shade or sun that bloom in summer. Then there are
all the Cimicifuga... simplex White Pearl is my favorite for its fragrance.
Hosta blooms everyone seems to ignore in the garden. Obedient Plant and
Turtleheads.Spigella or Wormroot is coming into bloom now. The list goes
on and on....
