Claire, do you not like Kerengishoma? Was it a fad plant where you live?
I would call it a staple here. Reliable late fall color. To me the
Melianthus looks like it belongs with New Zealand tree ferns - I guess it
looks like a cycad to me. It is not reliably hardy here in zone 8b, but it
is very popular and folks use it like an (albeit expensive) annual.

For me, I would like to get a mature Melianthus major.

As defined by Heronswood:
A magnificent, masterful mash of highly textural,
pinnate, blue-green foliage, becoming increasingly

Hey Duncan,
I have this plant for the past few springs in greenhouses that sell rare to
unusual plants. Since I live in the Northeast which is not a hotbed of
activity on new arrivals, I would conclude that you can find it somewhere
near your home.
For us it is a container plant, indoors or in storage during the cold
months.
I have never seen this plant bloom. Where I have seen it in gardens around
here, the pot is sunk into the ground making it look as naturally grown
there.
This is another plant that puzzles me. It looks like (I am ducking now) a
great big weed to me that is just passing through a fad phase. Remember
Kirengeshoma.
