Hello Paul,
I have not tried the down under strain of delphiniums. I keep meaning to
write and order a selection to play with, but never get around to actually
doing it. Do need to do the experiment and see where it leads. I gave up on
the strains normally found in the catalogs and garden centers for this area.
I have never been able to grow them to my satisfaction. They simply do not
perform well for me. Also, (I know this is nit-picking) I never get around
to staking anything... so if a plant needs staking to look good or keep the
blooms up from the mulch, it never seems to happen here.
I do have a native species of delphinium I grow very well, indeed, here.
Is it as showy as the doubles and the contrasting bees... ? Nope. But it
does live and bloom year after year with little or not care and attention
other than to cut it back after each flowering so it will rebloom. Began in
August and it is still in bloom here. Nice, lavender-blue flowers on good
foliage to about waist height. Do look into Delphinium exaltatum.
