For everybody in the Chicago area, the Mass. Horticultural Society has sold
it's 400 year old collection to the Chicago Botonic.
I have seen parts of this collection both at their library in Boston and
periodically at the New England (Boston) flower show.
These are spectacular texts with beautiful plates, maybe the best collection
in the US. Mass Hort must need money. They have expanded into areas that
are expensive and raised membership rates to levels that have caused the
loss of many member.
I surely hope the Boston spring show is not affected.
But to the books, if visiting the Chicago Botanic, these are books found
nowhere else and are worth an afternoon's visit. I was astonished to read of
this transaction. I would also have to conclude that Chicago Botanic is more
financially sound at this time.
Our Northeastern loss is Chicago's gain.
