Gene,
Here is a short list of annuals or plants that behave as annuals for me that
is require no work on my part and bloom each year by the process of self
seeding.
Papaver, including the much questioned opium poppy.
Nigella
Cleome
Larkspur
Nicotiana
Verbena bonariensis
Digitalis
Silene armeria
Viola, many kinds including the long bloomer, Viola corsica
Rudbeckia triloba
Centranthus
Cosmos
Lobelia
There are probably more that I cannot remember but these mentioned grow well
and bloom here yearly. Some are shade growers and some that are not will do
well in shade if they select the site themselves. I do not seed, care for or
plant any of these, they do well by themselves. Not only are they "good"
plants, they are in many cases "better" plants. A matter of opinion,
perhaps.
Off topic a bit, I will add here for Don M. the question on a specific strain
of poppy for drug production. In the Rix/Phillips newest on annuals they
state that the P. somniferum grown for opium production is a strain with pods
4 inches in length. I have never seen that plant. Their description is 10
cm. which would be about 4 inches. If that is certain information, none that
we are growing falls into that strain. Don, I do not remember seeing this
published in horticultural literature previously. Seems huge to me.
