Re: annuals for Gene/ nurseries

Hello Doug,
Lots of changes in the plant market.
I am sure businesses come and go every month, but not that I am in the
nursery business I can not help but notice the number of small ... and
large.. nurseries going out of business the past couple of years. Often
those who do not go bankrupt or simply sell out, are selling off the
business to others. Some are names that have been around for many years.
I am hearing all kinds of rumors about this nursery or that garden
center either breaking even at best or loosing for the overall year. One
local who I admire for many reasons complained to me this week that after
growing to over 30 some-odd employees, when the year is over his wife (a
school teacher) makes more money than his business after paying labor costs.
He is talking of cutting back to himself and his son.
Everyone seems to be attempting to re-invent themselves from the major
wholesalers on down. I have a feeling there is a whole lot more shaking down
to come.
