Claire: I think the only plant you listed that I haven't successfully grown
is Silene - the others I have and look forward to each year. The Foxgloves
and Larkspurs are gone before June but they are show stoppers from March thru
May. I too give them very little care and each year they come back (not the
Foxgloves, they are planted out each fall) and perform their little hearts
out for me.
So often I'm quiet on this list because of the perennials that are grown
further north just won't make it here in SE Texas - I have turned more
towards the sub-tropicals (for the most part)....I've certainly enjoyed this
last subject and trying to convince Gene of what he's missing----I'm also
think'n that maybe we are trying to convince the wrong person....maybe we
should be talk'n to his partner JoAn.
I've now been gardening for a little over 7 years and my taste has certainly
changed. When I first started gardening and flipping through dozens of
books, I longed for the "cottage" style garden. I tried and tried but just
couldn't achieve this look year round.
Now my garden has a changing feel with the seasons...in the spring, I'm
fortunate enough to have that "cottage" look by using Iris, Foxgloves,
Larkspurs, Love-n-the-mist, Verbena, and more. In June the look of the
garden goes from pastels to tropical. I'm a huge foliage person - for the
main part of my growing season, I select plants with great foliage first and
if it blooms I feel like I have a bonus. I know think of my summer and fall
garden as the Tropical Cottage Garden.
