A number of plants have there seeds germinate in late fall and over winter as
germinated seeds until spring-seedling are very cold hardy-but if you have a
leaf already then it should be protected maybe.
You could try to keep in a cold fridge for the winter or keep it under lights
and grow it out until it has some size or leave it out side in a protected
location with some lose-dry cover for the winter.
Its a challenging time to germinate for the gardener but if left to there own
most seeds will take care of them selves. Assuming the plant is hardy for
the location.
