Thank you for a southern view of perennial gardening.  I am still working on 
posts back months from computer ailments so this was a while back.  I thought 
I would throw my two cents in here on the mention of underplanting.  When you 
have a tall leggy plant such as a leafless rose, which is too common here, 
the idea of underplanting with a shorter bushy plant is such a good idea.  
When something is well entrenched but does not look so good for a large part 
of the growing season, a tender or annual underplanting improves the garden 
quickly.  Tall asters always look awful by the time they bloom so they are 
surrounded here by Artemesia.  Even if the taller plant is not to leggy, the 
surrounding or underplanting is an attractive idea.
