Dear Perennials List:
I’m having a problem with my Euphorbia griffithii ‘Fireglow’. It looks
great each year until it exceeds about 18” in height, which is about
mid-summer. As it continues to grow, it gets very floppy, and each
stem bends down to the ground, doesn’t look very good. Each stem
eventually gets about 36” in length. All of the foliage is in the
last 12-18” of each stem, so I’m reluctant to trim them back during
the summer - I’d be left with bare stems sticking out of the ground.
I have it growing in a site which gets morning sun until about
11:00 a.m., then is shaded. This year I did not fertilize it, but
still had the same floppy result.
Do you folks also have this problem? If yes, what do you do about it?
Do you stake up every stem out of the ground?
Should I perhaps be growing it in full sun instead of partial
shade? Where do you grow it?
All advice appreciated. Glen in Regina, SK, Canada
