Amaryllis

Does anyone know if I can buy an amaryllis which will have either a short
stem, or a very strong stem? I love amaryllis but they get so unattractive
which they start looking like the tower of Pisa. I have read that the
African strain of amaryllis has a stronger stem but I can find nothing
about whether a certain amaryllis is African when I go to the nursery or
search the catalogs.
