Geraniums

I have brought inside a big pot of geraniums and have cut them back rather
severely in the hope that I can just leave them in the pot, keep them in
the room where I have successfully overwintered impatiens for several years
in their pots, them return the geraniums outside next spring. Will this
work? (They are already putting out new foliage on the branches which I
pruned. )
