John,
How about some saxifrage (silver), dianthus, species bulbs-tulips,
daffs., alliums-, androsace for the sun and asarum, dodecatheon,
saxifrage, cyclamen, gentian for shade? I'm not sure of the hardiness of
these - I'm in zone 7.
I cannot point you toward a rock gardening book, but some sites of
interest for plants:
http://www.tir.com/~hhbotan/ 1997 catalogue ('98 not up yet) with
plants for rock gardens (with hardiness and culture info)
http://www.eskimo.com/~mcalpin/rick/tahoma catalogue of rock garden
plants
