I've been thinking about this as well -- what about strawberry guava?  Its
beautiful, fruits and takes little care, is evergreen etc.  I'll do some
more thinking about it.  Can't believe they'd recommend oleander.  But is
there another ceanothus that would do better than concha?  Ceanothus is so
wonderful, I'd hate to see you give it up altogether.
