I use PVC pipes with a good nursery marking pen.

You can cut the pipes to what ever length you want. You can also use different
diameter piping.  Lots of room for the plant name, date, cultural information,
source and any other bits of information you might want to add.

I push the pipes all the way into the ground because I do not like tags or
markers around my plants. But the pipes look all right next to the plants and
it is very long lasting.
