If you are concerned about the slug bait being eaten by other animals, what
you can do is wet the bait and place on the ground and put a board on top of
it with a large rock or something to hold it in place, most of the slugs
around the plant will find the bait in a few days.
Beer works because it smells like rotting vegetation to slugs. The alcohol is
an effect poison too.
