Hi Val:
Regarding Echium Fastuosum, I live in zone 9 northern California and grow
this species. In San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, these magnificent plants
are used like hedges. They do not like hard frost. I do have fresh seed
but have never propagated from them. I find it so much easier to take
cuttings. That way if we should have a bad frost, I always have replacement
plants to go out in the garden.
The mother plants (3) were given to me by a garden club member and I assumed
they were all the blue, however, one turned out to be beautiful purple. My
soil is clay, I am sure if I were to add hay and sand I could make pottery!
They do not seem to mind - I rarely water they in the summer, only during
the hottest times. They I use a soaker. My Echium have been in now for
three years.
If you would care to email me privately perhaps I could send some seeds or
whatever.
