Sure there is. There are bio-filters for one. They get water
clean enough for fish. There are bio-filter instructions on
many of the pond sites. Let me know if you'd like to have some
of the URL's.
I'm playing with a similar idea to the one you have mentioned.
I have major drainage problems on my property. The sump pump
pumps hundreds of gallons of (mostly) clean subterranean water
out into the back yard. Currently. I am in the process of
modifying that. I am going to have the water kind of
"pre-collect" in a larger area then it will naturally seep
through a barrier of clean gravel and sand before it enters a
pond sort of affair. I'm making provisions for overflow but
hopefully this will do several things.
First, it will show me whether that gravel/sand filtration works
at all. I'll be testing the quality of the water that comes
out. Even more important, it will hopefully stop turning the
entire rear of the gardens into a seasonal swamp. The Lobelia
cardinalis like it, but not much else does.
If the filtration works, I will modify the existing (illegal)
dry well the past owner installed, the sump water, the drainpipe
water (lovely rainwater) all into a single, filtered underground
collection system. I will pump that to use for irrigation and
to fill a bog/pond for sunloving perennials. If necessary, I
will swap the fine drip emitters for something less sensitive to
a little particulate matter.
I'm playing with this mainly because, having lived in a high
desert area for a time, I can't bear letting all that perfectly
decent water go to waste. :)
