Re: Hepatica Site/ Hardiness

Hello Mark,
The answer on hardiness is ... depends. The species native to eastern America
are hardy into zones 4 and 5. Most European species and hybrids are hardy into
zone 5.... possibly more. Japanese species could be a bit more tender depending
upon which part of Japan they are native to. I just ordered 3 Japanese species for
my garden that are rated into zone 5. I received a packet from a friend in Sweden
last week with 6 Hepatica.. all named forms of H. transssylvanica that are rated
zone 5.
In countries where gardeners are a bit more patient hepaticas have been bred
for centuries. Same with Asarums, or wild ginger. Both of these plants have been
used in Japan as family heralds on banners for many many centuries.
