Overwintering Water Lilies & Propagation

A good resource is "Aquatic Plants Their Cultivation - A Complete Guide
for Water Gardeners" by Helen Nash with Steve Stroupe.

The water lilies form tubers near the base of the mother plant. You
separate the tubers and plant the new tubers on a 45 degree angle with
the tip out of the planting medium.
I propagated several new lilies this way. I took the lilies out of the
pond and put them in plastic tubs with water and kept them in the
greenhouse. The temp in there was between 35 and 90 during the winter.
This year I'm experimenting and leaving one lily in the pond, put one in
the garage with no suplemental heat and put some in the greenhouse
again. We got to 20 below zero F. for 10 days last year and they came
through fine. We'll see how this year does.
