Asters over winter

According to Tracy di Sabato-Aust in The Well Tended Perennial Garden
(my new bible), Aster x frikartii 'Monch' "is a tend perennial. Several
authorities recommend that it not be cut back for the winter in order to
increase its survivability. Cut plants down in the spring after all
danger of cold weather has passed.
Aster novi-belgii " Some asters are attractive over the winter but
leaving the plants up can result in undesirable seeding. Be certain to
cut down any diseased plants before winter and clean-up debris from the
base of the plant."

Hope this helps.
