What's still blooming here in zone 5b central Illinois? We have had
a light frost so far (maybe tomorrow will change all that). It took out the
impatiens but left most of the hardier annuals, so snapdragons are still
bright, as are the bloodflower milkweed, althea zebrina, osteospermum, the
pineapple sage with brilliant red blooms, a few dianthus, and California
poppies.
Among the perennials, the Japanese anemones and still going but
starting to fade, the fairy rose is blooming, some lychnis coronaria are
still brilliant, mums (of course) are going great guns, English lavendar,
the daphnes, and the dwarf anchusas. The only bulb in flower now is the fall
crocus, but it's a charmer.
But the real show here is the fall color, which is incredible this
year. It's been so dry that the leaves haven't been knocked down by rains
and every tree is in color. The burning bushes are bright red, the gingkos
yellow, the oaks red brown, the sweet gums purple and pink and green and
yellow, and the maples amazing shades of red and orange. Some small garden
shrubs have colored nicely too, especially the dwarf fothergillia and the
St. John's wort, and even the dwarf lilacs are a charming yellow.
It was a great day Saturday to put in bulbs (species tulips, spring
crocus, some "resurrection lilies," and a few chionodoxa).
