Hi Susan,
What size plant have you been starting with? Are you treating it as a woodland
plant and giving it shade... protection from western exposure? All it requires is
a half way decent soil with a bit or organics, some chopped leaves for mulch in
the fall. Don't let it severely dry out the first year until well established and
it will take about anything. It really does have a large root system for such a
small plant so it can take care of itself. I never do anything to mine except dig
up some extras for the nursery.
