Re: Favorite Spring Perennials/ Mertensia

Hi Marge,
Don't know how much help I can be here.... I planted mine on the western edge
of my garden.. but down an embankment on the shade side where it gets little
direct sun, but plenty of light. There are shrugs and peony between it and the sun
and I am on the north side of a hill.
Soil is in a raised bed and half way decent on humus and drainage. Also under
the drip line of a cedar so it stays a bit on the dry side except in early spring.
Slugs dine regularly and just about eliminate the plan, but it comes back. I also
tend to let it get a bit on the crispy side during our dry periods here, but when
I water or get rain it comes back. Certainly no shortage of heat and humidity
around here.....
Mostly I would simply try it once more in a different spot. It sure is worth
the trouble to get established. I abused the hey out of this little plant. Came
from seed and I kept it in 4 inch pots forever. Those pots dry out in a heart beat
or get too wet and stay that way in winter.
