Re: Late Autumn Perennials/ Gentian

Hello Susan,
Gentians are a big favorite of mine. One, I especially enjoy the color blue in
a flower. Two, there are so many that are easily grown. Three, summer, fall and
winter bloomers in blue when gardens are beginning to need help with color.
The two I mentioned are late bloomers. Gentian saponaria, or Soapwort Gentian,
is about the same as the G. andrewsii except that it has foliage resembling a
soapwort. Both are native "bottle" gentians in that the blooms do not completely
open resembling little blue bottles all over the stems.
Gentian scabra is a sweetie... only about 6 inches tall, upright but with open
trumpet shaped blooms in lovely blue. Grows about anywhere from scree to just
average garden soil in sun to open shade. Do not know why it is not more well
known. Sure beats the hey out of quite a few of the others easily found on the
market.
