RE: Late Autumn Perennials

Hi Valerie and All,
Has anyone out there tried Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie'? It is new to me
this year and I am so impressed with it. I bought it in bloom in early
September and it still has a few flowers on it. It is short, ~18" (maybe
taller next year?) with burnt orange flowers and a dark purple circle in the
middle. The stems are the same purple. I have located a source for bulbs
and intend to order more. I have also grown C. 'Norwich Canary', a bright
yellow, but was not impressed with the length of bloom. A few years ago I
had one called 'Jenny Lind', a much softer yellow, very sweet. But it did
not survive the winter. I don't dig any of my bulbs, tubers, corms, etc.
except Cannas and tuberous Begonias. There is just too much to try to get
indoors. So they have to be able to fend for themselves outdoors here. I
hope Emily McKenzie will be tough!

Hi Joanie,
I've got C.'Solfatare', which is not a true yellow, more an apricot yellow;
it has lovely bronze leaves. I moved it this spring and it has not
flowered this year, but I seem to remember that it flowered for quite a few
weeks last year, and it is a really pretty plant. C. 'Lucifer' lasted three
to four weeks, and C. crocosmiiflora about 6. (I keep having to consign
large quantities of this to the compost: it is really too invasive for my
small garden.) Another new one for me this year was C. 'Dusky Maiden',
which has bronzy leaves, and bronzy-orange flowers. This was nearly over
when I bought it, but the colour was quite subtle. I'm hoping to get C.
'Citronella' which is a purer yellow than 'Solfatare'.
Which cultivars do you have? What do you do with them over winter?
