Winterizing

Lynn:

One of my large beds is full sun and loaded with daffodil bulbs. I like
the bulbs kept dry in summer so I overplant with things like sunflowers,
cosmos, zinnias, poppies, cleome, things that do not require watering. I
do not do a fall clean-up, I leave all the seed heads for the birds.
Come February, we'll get a warm day when I'm just dying to work outside
and that's the day that I clean out that bed. Byh that time, the birds
hae had quite a feast and little is left but stalks.

This bed is also subject to the leaves of the neighbors' oak trees and my
two dogwoods. The dogwood leaves just disappear but the oak leaves
don't. They take forever to disintegrate. I usually rake them out in
the same February cleanout. Another thing to consider with the oak
leaves is their acidity. You may or not want / need this added to your
soil.
