RE: container gardening

Hi Donna,
I like your idea of a pot containing pink Impatiens, Sweet Potato vine
Blackie and an old garden chair, but to keep Chris happy, lets add at least
one perennial to the pot!:) Let's see, how about Black Mondo Grass, or
Pennisetum setaceum rubrum (dark red leaves, huge fluffy plumes of pink all
summer). It is not hardy for us here in zone 8 and would better be
considered a tender perennial. Along the same color scheme - Penstemons
Evelyn (very pink), Blackbird (very dark purple), Garnet (garnet red) or
Mother of Pearl? Lets see - some trailing Nepeta around the edge with the
Impatiens would be pretty. I also used the upright Abutilons in pots this
year and will do it again. They bloom non stop. 'Mobile Pink' would be
pretty or how about 'Nabob', a deep dark wine color? I also used mini pink
roses with small Alliums, New Guinea Impatiens and Dianthus chinensis. How
about a nice pink hardy Fuchsia like 'Peppermint Stick' for a lovely
trailing effect with some variegated green and white small leafed Ivy? I'm
with you - more pots every year - it's a way to be very creative and it's
fun, fun, fun.
One other thing, did the violas cover all the plastic of the potting soil
bag? How did you use the bag? Just lay it in a flower bed or what? It
sounds very interesting. Do you do hanging baskets too? I have a pergola
full of hanging baskets from about April until now. Do remember to take
pictures of the combinations that work well if your memory is as full of
holes as mine!
Oh Yes - 2 other perennial grasses that are great in pots are the Carex
such as nigra 'Variegata' (green & yellow variegation), comans 'Bronze Form'
(looks like polished copper) or 'Frosted Curls' (silvery blue)

Hi Marilyn & Ginny

one of the things I love to do is the container gardening. every year I
say "this year I'm not gonna do many and every year I have more than
the year before", but there are so many differant things to do in a
container, and I place a lot of them in my flower beds, for color. I
want to do a large pot with lots of pink impatients and a few
"blackie" sweet potato vine. and place it in one of my flower beds,
and set a old garden chair next it.
last year I took a large bag of potting soil laid it flat and split
holes in it and put in viola's and it turned out beautiful. got a lot
of compliments on it. and it lasted longer than I expected.
there are all kinds of neat things to do. I get a lot of ideas from
gardening magazines

well posting this message has really lifted my spirts and I feel much
better than before. it always makes me feel good to talk about
gardening.

hope everyone makes it through the winter without going into
depression. dig out those magazines and those catalogs. there's fun
to be had in gardening

Happy Thanksgivng to one and all
