Re: garden fall clean up

I clean up in fall rather than in spring because our winter rains tend to
turn everything to mush and slime and I hate that.

Because we are in a new-to-us house and garden and are doing a fair amount
of reconstruction this fall, I've spent most of the last couple of weekend
doing serious clean out; this is early to be doing it in the PNW,
especially since our weather is still spectacular, but the beds need to be
redone before the weather turns. Last weekend, all the old veggie beds got
pulled, and we began to move them to make for a new perennial border.
We've chosen the anchor trees (which will get planted in November) and
shrubs (which will get planted next weekend). This weekend, I'll be moving
berries (several kind of blue and rasp) to the new edibles area (where
there are already several fruit trees) and move all the newly delivered
compost to the new perennial beds. I'll also plant out a bunch of
perennials (mostly herbs) from pots to the new beds. Most will get moved
in the spring, but they'll winter over more happily in the ground.
