I just planted my first two astrantia (Hadspen's Blood and rubra
carniolica) this summer, so I can't tell yet how they will do here in zone
5b. They are both in partial sun and we do supplementary watering in dry
times.
What I suspect is that they might be like a number of plants that
require extra watering for the first year or two until they are really
pretty big and established and then they are very reliable, hardy, flexible
as to moisture, etc. The Japanese anemones and many hydrangeas seem to fall
into this category for me. The tough part is the first two seasons...
