I think it's likely to be what is more usually called Corylus maxima
'Purpurea'. Either way, it's likely to get about 20' tall maximum and
spread of about 15'. It tends to be rather shrubby in its habit
("shrubby mass" describes it well) though I think you could perhaps
train it to a single trunk. Shapeliness is not its chief virtue though.
No horrors that I know of but it seems rather expensive. You can get
small ones which establish well for about £3 here (UK)(Is that under $10?)
