On a happier note we have a few flowers still in bloom here despite several
hard freezes.
The past discussed Viola Corsica is in full bloom in a trough and in a spot
in the rocky garden. Nothing seems to harm this plant. It is able to bloom
all year round if it can get out of the snow or frozen ground. The midsummer
heat causes a pruning back to the ground and by late August it is in bloom
again. The only essential seems to be very good drainage.
We have one allium, it has 'Japanese' in the common name and I haven't time
to check it just now but it is also in full bloom. This one will bloom in
the snow, nearly to Thanksgiving. A big clump is a great joy by the back
door,
Third and amazing (to me) is the chrysanthemum 'Sheffield' which is the pink
single distributed originally by the McGourty garden "Hillside" in
Connecticut. I think this is in general distribution now and a wonder plant.
The bloom is early here this year with it blooming through November most
years. It also requires excellent drainage.
Just why these three do not freeze the flower buds is a mystery to me with
all three being worth acquiring for zone 4 and colder gardens.
