Overwintering annuals

Hi guys,
I'm going to break my own rules and ask some questions about
overwintering annuals.
Before I do that though, I'm going to ask if there's any interest in
creating an annuals list at hort.net. I noticed that the yahoogroups
one seems a little dead (5 messages this year). If you think that
would be a good idea, send me a private reply (lindsey@mallorn.com).
Anyhow, back to business. Tonight it's supposed to get below freezing
here in East Central Illinois, so I don't have much time. :)
Last year I overwintered my Pelargoniums without any problems, but this
year I'd like to try some other stuff.
I've brought in all of the tropicals and will grow them in the house. I'm
not sure what to do with Ipomoea batata (sweet potato vine), Vinca
major, Asparagus sprengeri (asparagus fern), and Helichrysum petiolare
(licorice plant).
I'm going to try cuttings from all of these, but what about overwintering
the plants themselves? I understand that the Ipomoea tubers should be
dug up and brought inside like tender bulbs, but when should I do it?
Do I just snip off whatever greenery is attached?
I was going to try growing the asparagus fern as it is (repotted) under
lights.
With the Vinca I was going to try cutting it back hard and growing it
under lights as well.
I have no clue with the licorice plant. :)
Thanks for any tips!
Chris
