RE: Overwintering annuals

Marge,
I have had good luck overwintering my "sun coleus" (don't you love the new
hybrids, their colors are outstanding!) on my propagation mat in the GH.
While the air is very cool 40-50 F, the soil temp is a nice, toasty 70 F.
Cut the tops back to a couple of good nodes. They will look ratty, but will
re-sprout in the spring. Ditto the double rosebud Impatiens, Hibiscus,
Abutilons & Helichrysums.

I have absolutely lousy luck trying to overwinter coleus. In the
house, it gets bugs and the greenhouse is simply too cold for it - it
does not like cold at all. Had a lovely bright lemon yellow one
self-seed around from last year. Popped up in paving cracks and a
pot of something that died....am thinking to try to save seed from it
this year.
