RE: Poppies

Claire,
Thanks! I will keep fingers crossed that Lauren's Grape appears on the
NARGS seed list.
I agree that the doubles seems less inclined to reproduce in their original
colors. One year my garden club swapped seeds and I went home with a packet
of double pink poppies. They were really gorgeous, but smack in the middle
of the border was one huge black double (I believe these are called Peony
type) poppy. It was the talk of the garden....everyone wanted seed, or a
plant. Not knowing any better, I was confident that I would have the usual
large amount of seed to share with everyone. Hah! Skimpy supply to say the
least. So few that I decided to keep them all and try again. I never saw
another black poppy :(....pink ones yes, but only for a year or two and then
they faded away too. On the other hand, the big single lavenders, pinks and
reds are such abundant seed producers, we will never run out.
I am trying the black and pink peony types again this fall. I think it pays
to thin them pretty severely when they are small too. The remaining plants
get very large and husky.

Marilyn, if it turns up on the Nargs list, I will order it for you. I get
to
order twenty five packets of seed for membership and never need that many.
If I ever get enough to send to friends, I will post it. Since the Springer
book, this poppy has been discussed with no major seed company raising it
for
sales.
I have always found reds, doubles, and two-toned petals more difficult to
keep self seeding and returning. The ordinary nearly species pink is winner
seen all over New England which does not have the kindest of climates.
