Since we are discussing NC Gardens to visit, I must mention Daniel Stowe
Botanical Garden in Belmont NC (very near Charlotte). The reason that most
of you have never heard of it is that it is in its infancy as far as
botanical gardens go. But, consider the fact that it was designed by Edith
Edelman and Douglas Ruhren, two very talented garden designers. The
perennial beds are now about 3-4 years old and are full and beautiful.
There are many water features incorporated into the garden. Edelman and
Ruhren designed several beds at the JC Raulston Arboreteum. Doug also worked
at Montrose many years ago. One of the newest gardens is a white garden
that Doug designed alone and installation has begun on it. If you are
interested in learning more about this botanical garden look at the website
www.dsbg.org. Doug teaches various horticulture classes at the garden from
time to time and I continue to be amazed at his knowledge. Twice a year the
garden has plant sales (fall and spring). The Fall Plant Sale was last
weekend and I was pleased to meet and talk with the people who own and run
Pine Knot Farms (hellebores) and Richard Dufresne (salvias). There were
lots of other vendors. I had to buy a few salvias from Richard that he
hybridized and I got a gorgeous dried wreath from Judith at Pine Knot Farms.
I could have gone to the poorhouse for all that I COULD have bought, but
since I have just planted tons of plants from Niche Gardens and Plant
Delights I did not want to buy alot of plants this time. If any of you come
on trips down here, any time of year, there will be something of interest
and beauty at Stowe Botanical Garden!
