Lynn, it is Edith Edelman who is or was in charge of the gardens I saw at the
U of NC. They are quite well know in your state and certainly a terrific
source for Carolina gardeners. It was a few years ago. I remember seeing
the first really well designed display of grasses there.
Sounds like you hit the jackpot in sales and visits. I know Richard
Dufresne, the Salvia man. He has a website and was at one time selling some
plants on his site. I met him at Blue Meadow Nursery in Mass. and again the
next day when he stopped at a NARGS meeting I attended. Mr. Dufresne never
travels w/o plants in his company. There are always plants in his car or
with him. He is very amiable and loves talking Salvias or Agastaches. I
believe he is a chemist by training but a plant lover at heart.
We are finished with perennials for the season here. We have had several
freezes with one hard freeze this week which finished anything still hanging
on. You folks get a month or two months more some years than we have.
I can mention two plants that survive and bloom on despite the frosty white
mornings. First is Allium thunbergii 'Ozawa' , a big clump of light purple
Allium that will last until snowed upon and even past that. The second is
the Chrysanthemum "Sheffield" which is in full bloom now and will take a lot
of frost both foliage and flowers.
That would be about it for the floral display here with a viola or two
peeking out from under some debris. I will save your post into my travel
folder, these things are nice to have when on trip and looking for something
interesting for a gardener.
