Is "Prairienet.net" a clue?

Don't know that I caught your location, but our internet providers don't use
the word "prairie..."  Isn't your "average" soil type more basic than ours
on the East coast?  Recall one of my landscape professors saying that dead
vegetation lasted much longer in the mid-west than it did in the east.  

Wonder what the difference in the forest is?  Never see matted leaves in
real woods the way I do in the garden.  If I find a bag of magnolia leaves
(hollies are just as bad, with prickles to boot), I sometimes stomp on the
bag before spreading the leaves.  Once you give the bugs/microbes an edge,
they can get to work.  Seems like they have trouble with the unbroken waxy
cuticle.
