To answer both Karen and Paul,
This property was in Indiana and everyone called them pin oaks, but I
never did the research to find out what they really were. We sold the
property last year as it was a summer weekend place and our lifestyle
changed and no time to go there. We debated for three years, as we both
loved the place.
Anyways, it was very dense with only oak trees and pine trees. We had to
clear that spot as you couldn't even pitch a tent let alone drive a car
in there or put up a house.
Now that I am more into gardening than I was back 15 years ago, it
occurs to me that there was no understory there. Probably due to limited
light and massive leaves. In the cleared area it took forever for
anything to grow, and that had light. (don't panic folks, we cleared
about a 1/2 acres and left the rest natural around us, gave us privacy)
Finally some farmer neighbor came by with a canvas bag of something and
spread it around the garden areas so something would grow....I think it
was lime, but that was 15 years ago.
It did develop into a nice garden area in the clearing over the years,
as long as I got out there to remove those leaves in the spring... or it
would kill off (smother) the plants. The surrounding area never did grow
anything.
I live in Illinois, a new subdivision, aka cornfield, about 40 miles
south of Chicago... my isp (based in Iowa) is the only one offering a
high speed connection here and the company is only in rural areas. It is
a fixed wireless system so I have an antenna on my roof....:)
