Don,
I'm a little late in replying. We have a very tall streetlight in front of 
our property and Virginia creeper climbs up it regularly. It's very pretty when 
it turns red in the fall. I don't know if that plant grows in your region. The 
pole is cement and the vine clings to it without support, though it's easy to 
pull down.
