And on the subject of Blind slats, I found out last summer from an experienced gardener that there are two types of Sharpie markers. She uses the Industrial ones and has great success with the permanence of the writing. Took a bit of hunting before I tracked one down and now I have to hide it from my family.

I use the blind slats only for short term items. I have a plant sale in
April and another smaller one in August. I use these blinds to mark each
pot stored over winter. I have about 400 ready for next April and by then
many plants will be indistinguishable from each other. The blinds are good
enough for that long. I never use blind markers for anything I put in the
ground. Always Eon Rose markers with laminated tape for that. Also, it's
important when using blinds that they aren't dirty. Nothing sticks for long
on dirty blinds. I buy new ones at WaMart for under $4 and cut them up.
I got the impression Al might be doing cuttings or selling small plants and
short term labels might be sufficient for that. But if he's looking for
thermal, he probably wants permanent.

I first used venetian blind slats (metal ones) as labels, with writingdonewith a Sharpie. The printed labels will probably last longer than theSharpiewriting, but I found the slats themselves to be short-lived--they did stay
inplace much of the time. Maybe if you use such long pieces that you havethemabout a foot deep, they'll work. But I'm sticking with my Eon labels.Andyes, my labels last because of the laser toner in the printer; reportsfromthose using inkjet printers are not encouraging.
