I mentioned before the “Books That Work” software. It has 3D view (pretty
good, but not actual pictures). One can “walk” through the yard/garden, or
take a bird’s eye view. The view is what I would call stylized in that it
groups plants into one of several types and then uses that type to portray
the plant in 3D. It gives a very good representation, but not an actual
picture/design of the plants. It will show what the plant “looks” like at any
time of the year. It also has what they call “shadow caster” which (in 2D)
shows how the different plants will cast a shadow at any time during any day
of the year. You must orient your drawing to North properly, but it does the
rest. It will even show the shadow change over a single day or for a
particular time of day, over a year. Very well done! The database is pretty
large and does contain actual pictures, some better than others, when you are
selecting the plant you want. It also has a pretty good write up about each
plant.
The drawing is done in 2D, but it then interprets the 2D into a 3D
representation. As I noted before, it can take a lot of time, but if you
enjoy that kind of thing it’s great fun. Don’t use it to do the job faster or
easier, but as an additional part of a hobby that does require a lot of time
and patients, but rewards many times the trouble.
