Hi Rob, I am also in Zone 7, MD - Baltimore to be exact!  I cut back the dead
leaves to make them look a little better over the winter.  That way, in the
Spring, when new shoots come up the dead leaves are gone and no in the way.
 But, I always wait until the leaves are completely dead.
Where, in MD are you?
