I've had Calamintha nepetoides now for around 7 years. Really enjoy it.
Find it seeds like mad into my gravel drive (along with a lot of other
things). I pull seedlings by the bucketful each year. I think it likes
the gravel as a seedbed of choice as I don't find the seedlings in the
border where it is growing.
The soil in the border is also clay based, like yours. It seems to grow
fine in this soil, but just not want to 'seed' into it.
The 'mother' plant has increased in diameter somewhat, but doesn't move out
like mint. I think its preferred method of spreading itself around is
seed, but could easily stand corrected by someone who knows more than I do
about this child. It is likely divisible, although I haven't tried this,
having more seedlings than I have place for.
