Clematis Help

I have a new clematis which I purchased from Wal-Mart this past spring. 
The species wasn't specified and I have no idea what it could be.  The vine
grew well throughout the summer but no blooms.  Is it safe to assume that
this variety is one that blooms on old growth?  I am hesitant to do any
pruning till I know as I don't want to be another year without bloom.  What
should I do to prepare my mystery plant for winter?  I'm USDA Zone 5b/6a. 
Any help is appreciated.
