In a message dated 97-10-21 15:35:38 EDT, you write:
<< I have a new clematis which I purchased from Wal-Mart this past spring.
The species wasn't specified and I have no idea what it could be. The vine
grew well throughout the summer but no blooms. Is it safe to assume that
this variety is one that blooms on old growth? I am hesitant to do any
pruning till I know as I don't want to be another year without bloom. What
should I do to prepare my mystery plant for winter? I'm USDA Zone 5b/6a.
Any help is appreciated. >>
Being from Wal-Mart this won't be anything unusual, Jackmanii, Comtesse de
Bouchard, or something along those lines. In my zone 6 I don't do anything
to my clematis and they've never failed me. Since you don't know what it is,
leave it alone and wait to see what it looks like next year. Tell us then
that you bought it at Walmart and give a good description of the bloom color
and size and I'm sure someone can give you a really good guess as to what it
is.
