It depends on how much effort you want to put into it. I was living in the
Chicago suburbs where Rhododendrons are one of those marginal plants. Sure,
it will live, but will it flower each year, die back, lose leaves, etc.
Well, the first couple of winters I went to great lengths to keep my
Rhododendrons happy. I used Wilt-proof, covered with fabric, planted plants
to block them from the North wind. For the most part, it worked out great.
Then came the year when it dipped below zero in early November for 2 days.
Two gone. Then the next year the flu came a bit early and kept all 5 of us
or another in bed for a month. Lost a couple more. And so on. How bad do you
want that plant to grow outdoors?
