Perennial Book Picks

Hi Linda,

If you're primarily looking for pictures and descriptions to see
what things look like, _Hardy Herbaceous Perennials_ by Jelitto
and Schact is great. It's a two volume set for $125 (Hamilton
Books has had it for $80) and doesn't have a lot of cultural
information, but it does have a lot of pictures and a ton of
descriptions. For a mix of pictures and cultural information
I like _Perennials for American Gardens_ by Clausen and Ekstrom,
_Gardening with Perennials Month by Month_ by Hudak (about $50
each) and _Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia ($50 new, but it's
been around a long time and I frequently see copies in used
bookstores in the $10-$25 range). Phillips and Rix have a two
volume set _Early Perennials_, _Late Perennials_ that is a
viewer's dream come true - page after page of pictures with very
little text (these are $27 each, but Hamilton's has had them for
about $18 each - I got mine at a book fair for $9 each). They
also have a similiar book for bulbs; for information about bulbs
I like _Manual of Bulbs_ by Bryan and Griffiths - no pictures,
but lots of information. For ornamental grasses, I like
_Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses_ by Greenlee, a pretty good
variety (250) covered with high quality pictures and great
cultural information.

Overall, I like Timber Press books (www.timber-press.com) - they
are consistantly high quality both in terms of factual content
and illustrations. Hamilton Books (www.hamiltonbook.com) is a
great source for discounted books.

Hope this is of some use,

John
