Asters and many other perennials can be divided in the fall or the spring. I
can't stand cutting them until after they are done flowering. I usually use a
pitch fork to lift the whole clump out of the ground, and then I try to pull
it apart. If difficult I use a knife. I usually divide perennials in the
spring, because then I am feeling very motivated and I want to get my garden
set for the season. In the fall I seem to just want to put my garden to bed
for the winter. Cut all the stalks, clean up leaves etc. Mulch areas that
need it. Chris from Braintree, Zone 5
